  • The Fountain on DVD (2005)
Starring: Ethan Suplee,  Cliff Curtis,  Sean Gullette
    Director: Darren Aronofsky
    Certificate: Certificate: 15
Every now and again, a cinematic event comes along that challenges us as an audience. It happened with 2001: A Space Odyssey and it happened with Blade Runner. Both of these are now hailed as classics of the sci-fi genre.

Darren Aronofsky's The Fountain is another such film - way ahead of its time and one that deserves repeated viewings to appreciate the details.

Frustratingly for those of us who love this kind of movie, there is very little room in the current cinematic landscape for films that don't offer a narrative that can be distilled into one sentence, as demonstrated by The Fountain's poor box-office returns and mixed critical response.

Centering around the story of a man trying to save the life of the woman he loves, set across three time periods, The Fountain is a captivating, visually compelling, thought-provoking gem of a movie.

The exceptional performances from Hugh Jackman & Rachel Weisz and yet another mesmerising score by Clint Mansell really offer something fresh, different and inventive.

A perfect example of film as an art form.   3 out of 3 people found this review helpful
