A lovingly crafted film, gets to the heart of the divide between the consciences of the world of the sioux and the european American. This is how the west was won, by a condescending arrogance and brutal violence, and this film asks serious questions as to whether U.S. attitudes have changed at all since these days now that the whole world is its backyard. Wounded Knee, reported as a battle, was a tragic massacre of those that stood in the way of 'the American Dream', men, women and children,a repeated theme in it's history with such events as the sponsoring of death squads in Latin America and more recently the sacking of Fallujah. The film captures the struggle of a free born Sioux, brought up into white society to become a doctor and the prodige of a U.S. senator, to deal with the reality of the destruction of his people, through failed legislation intent to civilize (i.e. Americanize) them. I havnt seen a better or more well thought western.
