Frost/Nixon
on DVD
(2008)
Starring: Michael Sheen, Rebecca Hall, Toby Jones
Director: Ron Howard
Certificate:
A very watchable but flawed movie. I found the script a bit dodgy, particularly in the first half, and the characterisation was weak, particularly Frost's retinue. John Birt, for example, came over as a wishy-washy bag carrier. Like some other reviewers, I found it hard to separate Sheen's Frost from his Blair, and I didn't feel the movie really got underneath the skin of Frost. I also wasn't persuaded by the story of how he got to do the interview in the first place; this part of the film was clunky and unconvincing. Can it really be true that the interviews were going so badly until the late night 'burger' phone call, when somehow Frost at last got the measure of his man and finally turned to and got his brain in gear? Is life really like that? Or is that just film? Notwithstanding these criticisms, Nixon's performance was a treat, and the movie certainly did help you reach a better understanding of these pivotal events. A decent movie, but certainly not a great one.
