Thor: God of Thunder
on Xbox 360
Certificate:
Unless you've been living under a rock for the past decade no doubt you'll be aware that Marvel have pretty much spent the past few years delving through their back catalogue seeing what character they can reintroduce to movie goer's and gameplayers alike. This is something that occassionally works for them and they get a blockbuster hit like Spiderman that everyone enjoys. Unfortunately it would appear that for every Spiderman that's released there seems to be at least 4 other costume clad vigilantes rising from the ashes that just don't live up to expectations. What's worse is that, for each of these epic mistakes of marketting, some genius decided that what was really needed was a half baked attempt at a game to really sell the thing. Thor, the game, is exactly that! I'm assuming that the story follows similiar lines to the movie. I haven't seen the movie yet and to be quite frank after what I've seen here I'm not so sure I want to. Even if I had however I still wouldn't be able to say whether it follows the same line or not seeing as the devs in this case seem to think it was a good idea to turn the voices down so you can hear the generic score playing in (what really should of been) the background. Add to these issues some trully dire voice acting and what you end up with is cutscenes that are nothing short of a nightmare. I'm half way in as I write this and honestly I have no freaking clue whats going on and even less reason to find out. The next major nail in this games coffee (and one of its biggest movie-tie-in evidences) is its terrible graphics. I really am amazed that Marvel can make blockbuster films with such stunning effects and yet manage to pass off something like this as a finished product. I have actually seen better graphics on a browser MMO! Why don't they understand this simple fact? Yes, graphics are not the most important feature of a game, that doesn't mean that they're not important at all. For a decent interactive experience you need a lot more quality than this disaster can provide. Finally there's the gameplay. Well I say gameplay. I think what I actually mean is mindless tedium. It's your basic button bashing hack and slash recipe. A small attack and a big attack. Then there is a long range attack of sorts although it's not exactly very good (doing minimal damage to low level enemies) and way too overcomplicated (requiring pressing the right thumbstick to get into 'stance'). Finally there's ever so popular one bottun destruction attack that has the great habit of turning up just as you no longer need it, So essentially you can expect to watch the same few mind numbingly repetitive animations all the way through to the end. Given the tacky set pieces and general thrown together feel this was one thing this game couldn't afford to get wrong - but it did anyway. Overall, this is nothing more than a tedious movie tie in with zero charm or appeal, steer clear. And as a personnal message to whomever at Marvel is responsible for this utter garbage, Shame On You, you should be banned from making games! Graphics: * Sounds: * Gameplay: * Story: * Overall *
