Wall-e is the latest full-length Disney Pixar feature following Ratatouille last year. I have to admit my expectations were very high. Although Ratatouille was also very good, I felt like it was not advertised enough to show it as the next big Pixar animation. Wall-e however, has been whispered throughout the media from mid 2007, and with several brilliant teaser trailers, I found myself counting down the days until the opening night. When the day finally arrived I knew I would enjoy the film, but I wasn't prepared for what I was about to see. I was completely blown away. There is little anyone can say to do this film justice. The film is similar to 'Finding Nemo' except that Pixar have taken its idea of the vast, ever-changing ocean and expanded it to something literally out of this world. From the opening scene of a serene, limitless space, you are spell-bound. For the first thirty minutes of the film you watch the instantly loveable Wall-e go about his daily life, allowing you to connect with him on a personal level. The style of this first section is similar to that of an independent film (a bold move for Disney to make but they pulled it off superbly). As the film progresses, you become captivated in its overall beauty. Each Character is brought to life through their animation and progresses as the plot does. They are all loveable in their own way and never become static or unconvincing. The graphics are beyond astonishing and combined with the wonderfully atmospheric soundtrack by Thomas Newman (Finding Nemo, Six Feet Under) you are painted a vivid and vibrant story filled with living, breathing characters that have been perfectly captured within Disney's world of digital magic. Of course Wall-e also has a lot more to it in terms of structure. Although it’s set in the future, at some point you will realize that it is making several points the world we live in today. These are shown in universally friendly ways that raise concern but not worry. Although Most Pixar films are raising thoughts on something, Wall-e is the first to show us what could potentially happen to our world and our future. To counteract this, Wall-e is primarily a comedy and truly is suitable for all ages. The humor is great no matter who you are and keeps both parents and children entertained throughout. It can also be emotionally gripping in both the light and dark aspects of the film. You can feel genuine joy, amazement, concern, anger, relief, and sadness during its running time and since there is not much dialogue, that is a big accomplishment. The mood ranges from pulse-pounding to enchanting and everywhere in between. To sum up, Wall-e has taken Disney down a very different path filled with more gripping realistic concepts but with just as much creativity and imagination. Pixar has taken a fresh, bold idea with an enticing storyline, a great sense of humor, a beautiful setting, a loveable cast, a sensational soundtrack, a feel-good atmosphere, and a moving, heart-filled message, and with a monumental amount of work have created a truly spectacular and stunning visual Masterpiece that will go down in history as a work of pure cinema genius. As I sat mesmerized by its majesty, I wondered how Pixar would ever be able to top Wall-e. I hope that they continue with this slightly different style of filming because Wall-e has infatuated me and left me hungry for more.
