Me, You And Everyone We Know
on DVD
(2005)
Starring: Miranda July, John Hawkes, Miles Thompson
Director: Miranda July
Certificate:
After sweet indie triumphs like ‘Garden State’ and the dark, funny work of Todd Solondz, ‘Me And You And Everyone We Know’ is a major disappointment. The hype would have you believe it's sensitive, deep and affecting. The truth is that this is a profoundly irritating film, in which every word each character utters is filled with self-help pseudo-profundity, adult dialogue is thrust into the mouths of child characters and the utterly infuriating main character, played by the writer/director Miranda July, is supposed to be kooky but is actually more like a mosquito buzzing around your head in the dark as you lie in bed. Only the charisma of Deadwood's John Hawkes and the youngest of the children makes it at all watchable. Vain, naive and supremely facile, with all the script's bones sticking out for all to see. It's not weird, it's just badly written tripe.
