When it comes to setting a scene, creating an atmosphere and generating fantastic visual shots, this movie scores highly - unfortunately the makers seemed to forget about the other important part of a movie - the plot... Time was clearly an issue, set in an environment where feasibly nothing could happen for lengthy periods, the director seems to have made some editing cuts (and/or story cuts) which saw brilliant slow-paced suspense filling scenes concluded with hasty and highly fortuitous ones. This set the tone for the whole movie. Cargo starts off very well, it's very atmospheric and as the story unfolds the viewer becomes enticed with anticipation. Sadly, however, the viewer is left wanting as the build up, although interlaced with some breathtaking visuals, promises much but ultimately fails to deliver. It is definitely one of those movies that are watched to the end to see if anything more interesting might happen only to be a little bit disappointed when the credits roll. This said, it does hold an epic majesty about it and each scene reveals something new and interesting to view and digest thus being able to hold an audience. For non German speaking viewers, the subtitles can come and go a little too quickly and interrupt the spectacle a little, but the gist and the essence of what is happening isn't really lost (there are always 'rewind' and 'pause' if you really care). Ultimately, based on artistry alone, this film deserves a solid 8/10 but, as aforementioned, a high rating is derailed by an obvious, rather pointless story and a hastily concluded finish leaving the audience no better off (in terms of overall entertainment) at the ending than they were at the beginning...
