Need For Speed: Carbon
on Wii
(2006)
Certificate:
What could have been an incredible game is ruined by sluggish and inconsistent controls. Now, I understand that control between cars change, but when controls change for different races, I tend to stick two fingers up at the game. The graphics are amazing, the story (although dumb as hell) is engaging and the police chases are truly exciting, but one thing I do expect from driving games is the ability to turn corners. I spent the weekend trying to figure out how to drift around the corners, but only ever felt as in control as a five year old trying to wrestle with a fireman's hose. And then I entered a drift race and the car i was using suddenly appeared able to drift with no effort, but still no control. I like my games to be easy to learn but hard to master. This title was just v-e-r-y frustrating. I even tried different combinations when souping up different cars (which in itself was quite satisfying), but to no avail. Perhaps the problem is that you don't get any instructions with games that you rent, but I did try all the different control options. If someone tells me that they're great at drifting (and how they do it!) I might give this game another go - it really does have a lot going for it. Otherwise, i wouldn't recommend this to a raving masochist for fear that it might be just a little too painful for them...
