My wife and I are great fans of French films. 'A Very Long Engagement' is to us, the quintessentially French and excellent film.
We thus were very disappointed by this film. We found it self-indulgent, a contrived plot and ultimately never engaged us. There was a feeling of art for art's sake in the plot and the characterisation. No character engaged our sympathy and the central characters were egotistical and self-indulgent and, in that respect, seemed to mirror the plot.

Ultimately, it never engaged us and represented the worst side of French over-intellectualised, gitane-smoking French plots   0 out of 4 people found this review helpful
