Mad , 21 November 2008
  • Resident Evil - Extinction on DVD (2007)
Starring: Milla Jovovich,  Oded Fehr,  Ali Larter
    Director: Russell Mulcahy
    Certificate: 15
Completely and utterly mad. This film has it all. It steals from just about every decent horror movie ever produced and a few more. The saving grace of the movie were 2 actors. Ali Larter and Mila 'Alice' Jojovich. Both these foxes seemed to have the inside lane to horror and action. Ali Larter you will recognise from Final Destination and Heroes and, well Mila you have seen her evolvesince her days in the Fifth Element, Resident Evil and Resident Evil Apocalypse.
The road train was quite admittedly stolen from Mad Max and the Crow scene a copy of the Hitchcock Movie The Birds just to mention a few. The one thing I did like about Mila is the fact that she does her own stunts, where if you follow the film closely you will notice that she does them very well. I just wish that they gave her some original material to work with. Gone is the conciseness and succinct manner in which Apocolypse was done but it does play out during the day. And knowing what the hot desert air can do to people I can firmly understand why some of the movie was cut short.
There is very little on the dvd apart from the film and some commentary. But apart from that there was little saving grace for the movie. It is not an awful film, in fact it is very well put together but like I said earlier it lacks that spark of originality. Definitely worth a rental if you haven't already watched it on Sky HD this past week. I was impressed with some of the artwork and some of the photography. Mila even sports her own costume for the film. Good movie but not as good as the first and second. And yes my titlefor the review is MAD because it is that in bucketfuls. Mutually Assured Destruction. To borrow a phrase. This franchise has the self deprocation of imploding on itself if they don't think up something better for the next. Will the next film borrow from the film 30 days of Night, I wonder?
