Now I aint ever one to have claimed to be in any way cultured and I certainly aint a snob when it comes to my cinematic tastes, but in saying that, i'm also not one to sit down and enjoy a Seagal-fest of a sunday evening on channel 5 (even if its the only alternative viewing to the 6 and a half hours of 'Skating on Ice with the cast of Hollyoaks' or '10 minutes of fame Factor' on terrestrial tv that seems to be on ALL WEEKEND EVERY WEEKEND!! How much we payin for TV Licences now?). However, I was watching one of the 'Evening with Kevin Smith' shows recently and he said 'A Man for all Seasons' was his favourite movie. Me being a fan of Smith's stuff and always on the lookout to expand my movie viewing horizons decided to check it out.

So I went into this viewing knowing feck all about it other than Robert ('..Farewell an I do to you fair Spanish ladies..') Shaw was in it. The story is about Sir Thomas More's refusal to grant an annulment to King Henry VIII for his marriage to Catherine of Aragon. This is due to her being barren and therefore unable to provide the King with an heir. More is then sentenced to be put to death by beheading and even then with the sword of Damacles hanging over his head, his will wont be broken.

The tale is one of remarkable integrity in the face of impossible adversity. Lessons to be learned by all mankind here and which certainly still, and damn well should, ring true (louder than ever) today. In our modern day world where money and corruption's hold on us is stronger than ever - More's actions should be a testament for the common good, for honesty and justice. Ideals which are seldom seen these days. I can hear Jerry Seinfeld saying to me, '..shouldn't you be out on a ledge?..' so i'll leave the preaching at that for now folks.   1 out of 1 person found this review helpful
