WALL-E
on DVD (2008)
Starring: Fred Willard, Jeff Garlin, Ben Burtt
Director: Andrew Stanton
Certificate:
This review's title unfairly denegrates Pixar's other films which, in the worst cases (Cars, A Bug's Life), are merely very good movies but WALL-E is so brave, so enchanting, so inventive and so damn entertaining that I couldn't care less if The Incredibles are offended. Few can match Pixar in terms of storytelling with charm and intelligence but they've raised the bar so high now that it's difficult to see how they can top it, such is the sheer joy that this movie provokes in the viewer. If you take your CGI animation only with celebrity vocal performances, wisecracks and simplistic moralising, it's time to be challenged because WALL-E consistently takes the path less worn and is such a rewarding experience as a result. In truth, there may be a section of today's A.D.D.-addled children who are unable to take to the little 'bots patient charm. The others, however, will be treated to what is, arguably, the finest animated family film ever made and I don't make that claim lightly.
