Mahler - Symphony No.4 And 7
on DVD
Director: Mahler, Mcnair, Bpo
Certificate:
It took me a very long time to get into the world of Mahler's music. Now that I am in, it is unlikely that I can ever leave it,even if I wish to. There is so much to appreciate and this disc does much to encourage further listening of all the symphonies. Number 4 excels in the last movement when this mighty orchestra is joined by a most delightful soprano to produce a sublime finish. Number 7 is a far more cohesive work, each of the six movements having their own identity yet carry the main themes throughout. The fifth movement'Nachtmusik II;Amorosa' depends for its romanticism on the introduction of guitar and mandolin (not instruments usually associated with a Symphony Orchestra). In this performance, I would have liked there to have been more emphasis on the passages reserved for these instruments. Nevertheless, it is an amazing recording and so helpful to actually see the musicians producing Mahler's sounds.A disc worthy of any collection.
