  • Rescue Dawn on DVD (2006)
Starring: Christian Bale,  Steve Zahn,  Jeremy Davies
    Director: Werner Herzog
    Certificate: 12
It is important to note that this a gritty prisoner of war film rather than a blockbuster. As such the movie falls into the 'inch perfect' genre where realism, character development and acting prevail. And it does it well.

The POW camp feels extremely realistic. The guards have strong personalities and the inmates don't look like Steve McQueen or Charles Bronson. In fact they are malnourished miscreants who, to a man, are portrayed brilliantly. Bales performance is exemplary and much of the film is pivotal around that but behind this is some brilliant direction by Herzog who keeps the film both grounded and stupendous at the same time.

I won't 'spoil' the ending but my only disappointment was the ending which I felt was slightly out of character with the rest of the film. Other than that this is almost certainly a movie that will appeal to film lovers.
