The Magdalene Sisters
on DVD
(2002) Starring:Geraldine McEwan, Nora-Jane Noone, Anne-Marie Duff Director:Peter Mullan Certificate:
When I saw this film I was disturbed how young women were treated by their families and the church. The true story is about young women who were pregnant or disruptive in school who were disowned by their parents and sent to monastries looked after by the nuns. This is an understatement as the nuns humiliated them and had punishments for those who were disobedient to the church or tried to run away.It was set in Ireland and I was surprised that these events happened from the '60's t6 the '90's.The nuns were living and fed in luxury, but the women had to work hard, especially in the laundry, and ate basic food. The film was a bit like a documentary as it back tracked to some of the women who went into the monastry. There is some humour in this film, but most of the film is very moving and it made you feel for these poor unfortunate women and shame on the families and the Church for what they did.
