The Strangers
(2008)
Starring: Liv Tyler, Scott Speedman, Gemma Ward
Director: Bryan Bertino
Certificate:
I should have guessed from the trailers of this film just how thin and lacking in substance it would be. I went anyway thinking it might be worth a watch and pass some time. How wrong I was. It succeeds in making you jump, as provided by tense music and cut-to scenes of people in masks... but that could be done by a child with a camcorder at home. Often I'll watch these films and think, o.k. why haven't you got a way of defending yourself? Why no shoes? brain? etc, and 'why make so much noise and start doing unimaginably stupid things?'. The simple answer is that if the characters weren't inherently stupid, the film could not move on to the pointless ending. The old adage of the perpetrators inflicting violence and intimidation just because they can is old, boring and unimaginative. We don't get to find out what they are doing it for, and to be honest by the end I didn't care. Don't waste your time.
