Witchfinder General
on DVD
(1968)
Starring: Vincent Price, Ian Ogilvy, Nicky Henson
Director: Michael Reeves
Certificate:
I can see where the original backlash came from - the film is sadistic in its lingering portrayal of torture, execution, and lurid, non-naturalistic blood. On the other hand, it is not as open to the charge of exploitation as many horror films, as in this case it depicts a social, moral ill in all its beastiality. This is all the more justified when there are parallels with today's tabloid 'witchhunts' and officially sanctioned torture. I can't say I enjoyed the experience of watching - or of listening to the screams from beginning to end. My wife slept very badly after viewing it. However, it is a haunting piece of work. As others have mentioned, great use is made of the countryside. I thought the witchfinder's assistant acted well - relatively subtle evocation of sadism mixed with cowardice. And the device of switching to a grainy picture during peaks of cruetly was effective. It somehow underscores the exceptional nature of what is happening: the nasty strangeness.
