Juno
on DVD (2007)
Starring: Ellen Page, Michael Cera, Jennifer Garner
Director: Jason Reitman
Certificate:
Juno is a ‘nice’ film. While most films would see a teenage working-class pregnancy as a reason for an angst-fest, everyone in Juno is totally cool with it. The gal herself manages to combine childish innocence with massively mature insight: she worships her dorky boyfriend yet is able to analyse the finer points of Seventies punk rock. The film manages to get away with the contradiction. She and her co-stars are given some great lines too. BAFTA-winning screenwriter Diablo Cody (crazy name …) has been able to transcribe the sharp wit of the streetwise without softening its edge too much. Juno’s done a good job at flattering its target audience: youngsters will love it. For the rest of us, there’s a lot of humour and just enough poignancy to stop this feel good movie being too sickly sweet.
