With many animated movies looking for realism over content, this is a refreshing change, with a more stylized design but great script. Technical, its got some pretty incredible scenery and animation; sand blows around, water crashes in the surf, the screen is filled with dancing fuzzy limas and they all look fantastic. The jokes are funny, with the minor characters actually getting a lot of the best ones – personally, although the military penguins are excellent I think the 2 monkeys steal the show. I’m a big fan of Shrek and this more than matches it, plus is an improvement over similar films like Ice Age and Shark Tale. Not just one for the younger members of the family, it should entertain all ages. One I’ll be adding to my collection. Note, the bonus material doesn’t contain any additional penguin action, which was disappointing as I was sure there was an animated short about their trip around New York at Christmas somewhere. It does give some interesting insights into the animation process though.
