Classic stoner comedy , 29 November 2008
  • Half Baked on DVD (1998)
Starring: Dave Chappelle,  Guillermo Diaz,  Harland Williams
    Director: Tamra Davis
    Certificate: 18
I heard about this often especially as I became a fan of Dave Chappelle after watching the fantastic 'Chappelle's Show' which unfortunately became defunct due to the shows constantly rising popularity.

I wasn't quite sure what to originally expect from this film so I had an open expectation towards it. As I saw it I realised the style it had in regards to Dave Chappelle's comedy show, which is not surprising as he and his co-writing partner who wrote this film also worked together on the show as well.

But it's your typical stoner type of comedy, if you like that sort of thing. I noticed with this one however that there was a lot of that emphasis on the subject matter. Usually with most stoner comedies the drug aspect is merely the 'mcguffin' to set something else up as to what else is really happening in the film. I also liked that there wasn't too much emphasis in terms of the love interest. Technically the film could had still worked without it.

Some of the DVD features on the disc seem very irrelevant and have nothing to do with the film itself. Considering there is already a set of deleted scenes, alternative ending and a commentary track, it makes you wonder why there was a necessity to include features such as 5 animated shorts about different types of weed smokers, a pointless feature called 'Granny's guide to bakin' ' and the only closest relevance to the film called 'Five minutes with the guy on the couch' which is literally just that....the guy on the couch sleeping with the footage rolling for 5 long minutes.

As mentioned the 'Granny's guide to bakin' feature was not even funny at all, it had slight weed-referenced innuendo's with someone dressed up as a granny who gradually ends up being high as she bakes. Again I ask WHY?!! I have never seen such a DVD before that's included feature that are completely irrelevant to the film other than it's relation to the subject matter. There's only so much you can do with weed jokes.

Regardless of these pointless features the film is good for those that enjoy this type of comedy and to see some of Chappelle's material before his show happened several years after.
