American poetic realism feels dated, and at times even absurd. More enjoyable when Margo is offscreen. Pretty hard to tolerate when she is on.

Burgess Meredith makes like a young John Garfield in a likeable lead.

A bit self important. But surely no film has featured a larger quantity of rain. Even given the slender running time.
