I'm a huge Paul Auster fan, so I was quite surprised to hear he'd written two screenplays that I hadn't heard of. Very touching, I interpret it as a quiet study on human nature, covering loss, empathy, regret, solitude and friendship. The main characters aren't heroes, the bad guys aren't, when examined, perhaps so bad as they seem. With possibly one of the most beautiful endings (it made me a little tearful) I've seen, Smoke is a must-see film.
