La Jetee / Sans Soleil
on DVD (1962)
Starring: Helene Chatelain, Jacques Ledoux
Director: Chris Marker
Certificate:
Rating is for the oldest work, La Jetee. I've split review to each work on DVD. La Jettee Here is a short film that shows how great film can be. A poem on global crisis and human beings' inability to escape our hardwiring from evolution. Also a beautiful study if: engagement, love, hope and beleif. Also an inspiration for Terry Gilliam's Twelve Monkeys. Surprisingly taught and dynamic given it has virtually no moving pictures, in the usual sense, but a lyrical flow of still images and french dialogue (subtitled in English quite effectively.)***** Mark on Mark For me an educational though pretty dry exploration of Chris Marker. Unfortunatley somewhat lacking in that Chris Marker is not in the footage, just his work, others explanations and their evaluation of it. Still if you are as ignorant as me of Chris Marker's work has some helpful insights. ** San Soleil A very differant work, but still very poetic. Using footage from around the globe reflecting on the West's cultural values in the light of 3rd World's lack of freedom to share in the globe's resourses. ***
