Doctor Who - Series 4 Vol.4
on DVD (2008)
Starring: David Tennant, Catherine Tate, Billie Piper
Director: Graeme Harper
Certificate:
Three of the best episodes of Dr Who that I have ever seen. In Turn Left we see how the Who universe would be if the Doctor were not there - it is a bleak and weary place. This was eagerly awaited as the story that saw the return of Billie Piper - but Catherine Tate stole the show. Her reaction to what she saw in the circle of mirrors was breathtaking. In The Stolen Earth and Journey's End we have the companions coming together first to defend the Earth in the Doctor's absence and then to follow his lead against Davros and the Daleks. It is hard to pick a single favourite moment - I have limited myself to six (!) sections that stand out: 'Harriet Jones, former prime minister'; then of course the Doctor's reunion with Rose, and the famous cliffhanger; the moment when the Doctor's soul is revealed; Murray Gold's joyous music completing the glories of the Earth being towed home; the scenes leading up to THAT kiss; and, of course, Donna Noble's departure - it was simply heartbreaking. Like, it seems, most of the rest of the Whovian fanbase I had doubts about Catherine Tate's return to the series - and how wrong we were. If I had to rank the three companions of the new Who she would come out on top. She is a terrific actress who gave her all to series 4 and completely won me over. I only wish she had been able or willing to commit to a longer stint as Donna Noble.
