Battlestar Galactica is a fantastic concept not fully realised. The idea of the entire sum of the human race (some thousands) fleeing through space as refugees is dark and intriguing but the series doesn't do quite as much with it as it should. The mini-series fares better, as it has the structure of a feature-length film and can therefore give the central plot-line its full attention. The drama's always pretty gripping, but the need to make self-contained episodes feels contrived and distracts from their compelling and overwhelming plight. The script is clumsy and contains far too many stirring speeches and hoarse, heroic declarations. This is coupled with a limited acting vocabulary of brooding stares, manly swallowing of incipient emotion, and whimsical smiles of the part of the president. The characters are under-developed, with the possible exception of Dr. Gaius and his number 6 Cylon model, both somewhat sadly annoying. That said, the tension is always sustained and I personally like the camera work. It's not refined sci-fi, but the Cylons are scary, the desperation palpable, the dogfights intense and exciting, the character dynamics alive and kicking - all ingredients that keep you fairly rapt. The episodes barrel along with the gung-ho jeopardy/heroics of, say, Independence Day and are perfectly enjoyable even if not terribly impressive.
