Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy
(2 discs)
on DVD (1979)
Starring: Alec Guinness, Joss Ackland, Michael Aldridge
Director: John Irvin
Certificate:
Really intelligent spy drama conjuring up a bygone male-dominated era of Cold War espionage. It is all quite bewildering at first. In fact you may still have very little idea what is going on after episode 2 or 3! Why, for example, from London, are we suddenly in Czechoslovakia, or Portugal, with completely different characters?!! Me and my wife actually gave up after 2 or 3 episodes, but I gave it another chance before getting rid of the DVD and I'm glad I did. You will need to concentrate, and probably rewatch early episodes or bits of episodes in order to work out what's going on. If you're not willing to do that, don't rent it, but it is rewarding and potent stuff. Atmospheric, and building to a good climax. They don't make them like this any more. No dumbing down whatsoever!
