Shawshank redemption is a film about hope, resilience and the inescapable cruelties of prison. A banker namedAndy Dufresene(Tim Robbins) has been wrongly imprisioned for the death of his wife. At initial appearance it seems to everyone in the courtroom and the viewers that he is a totall cold, remorseless, unfeeling chracter. When he arrives at the prison, all the existing inmates gather and cheer at the arrival of new company. Morgan Freeman, a long time inmate and his prison pals place bets on who is 'going to crack first'. Morgan Freeman says Andy the posh guy with the silver spoon will crack first. He couldnt be further wrong. We very quickly become very intrigued with the chracter of Andy and his uncompromising willingness to maintain his air of dignity. In one sense the viewer can see that the character of Andy is coping with his prison surroundings without any resistence and on the other hand his rock hard solid belief of coming out of there. As a viewer I was left totally mystified the plot just does not give itself away. Andy has become a pawn not only in the system of miscarriage of justice but his any hope of being released by the only alibi he has found is sabotaged. He is trapped in a huge web of corruption and how the prison will make him useful for their own means. In prison we see not only Andy's informidable, diligent, and seemingly contradicory character but we also get a look at the desperation, vulnerability of his close friends but also see them coping daily. The villians character is equally very well developed and intriguing because as with everything in this film the chracters natures unfold gradually. We only find out about the main characters true goodness or evil near to the end.
