The Clairvoyant
on DVD
(1934)
Starring: Claude Rains, Fay Wray, Jane Baxter
Director: Maurice Elvey
Certificate:
I was drawn to this film by the two leads, the great claude rains and fay wray who'd I'd only ever seen in king Kong.As a fan of old thriller/chillers to give them a title i was intrigued to see a british one I hadn't heard of. I enjoyed this film alot, it wasn't overlong and didn't drag like some of this era.It has some humour, a happy ending of sorts, a great court room scence and an underground disaster where most of the budget got spent(another disaster isn't shown at all, only reported on-british films clearly had a lower budget then too!, although this in some ways makes it more effective.), and Mr Rains goes all wide-eyed ala Bela lugosi and gives him a run for his money. Okay it's not perfect (the romance/love angle is a bit dated) but it's an enjoyable romp waiting to be re-discovered by people like myself who enjoy that kind of thing.
