  • The Wind That Shakes The Barley on DVD (2006)
Starring: Cillian Murphy,  Padraic Delaney,  Liam Cunningham
    Director: Ken Loach
    Certificate: Certificate: 15
Very well executed telling of a very devisive piece of all too recent history. It is dealt with in a very even handed manner; depicting clearly the brutality, confusion, suffering and conflicts of interest experienced by both (or should that read all) sides of the war.
Brilliantly there is little attention given to events of the time in Dublin; obviously the characters we see hear news and updates of battles and victories/losses there but these serve to give a background and a timeline to what we are focussing on. The film centres around the boys, girls, men and women of a rural village in southern Ireland; showing us how aspiring professional young people (really how any of us) can become/be turned into guerilla warriors.
All characters are perfectly underplayed to such an extent that you almost feel you really are watching a slice of history. This film should leave you wanting to go out and discover more about the true history of the Irish Republican Army; if it does not then I fear for your sanity!   1 out of 1 person found this review helpful
