The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

This game is as close to stepping into another world as you're likely to get for a long, long, time. The world is enormous, and stocked with characters who go about their own lives regardless of you, unless you should choose to get involved them. The lock picking, persuasion, and some other skills are represented by mini-games so that your skill as a player counts as much as your characters skill. The failing of previous renditions of having to do the boring travel yourself is remedied by 'fast travel', and activating a current quest for display on the map means you avoid the frustration of not being able to find your way to your destination. The graphics, and customisability of your character, are astonishing. Enough of a plot to keep you from feeling at a loose end, but non-linear enough for you to feel freedom of choice. A vast improvement over the previous elder scroll games. Unmissable for RPG fans, and recommended for all players who enjoy deeply immersive single player gaming.
