very stark, very bleak, very dark, but the truth about the degradation of the camorra and its destructive persistence in naples. in the extreme poverty and lack of hope, the children are recruited into the crime gangs and forced to pick sides, leading to death and betrayal. the acting is superb and convincing in this beginningless and endless tale of corruption. drugs on a low level and the cynical contracts to dispose of toxic waste in illegal landfills on a 'higher' level, all combine in a kind of inferno. only one small ray of hope when one boy - roberto - decides to get out of the 'life.' a powerful indictment of a society abandoned by government and ruled by fear, this film is hard to watch at times, but i found it riveting and one of the most powerful movies i have seen for years, and a welcome antidote to all those robert de niro glossies about the american mafia. this is what really happens.
