Van Gogh - Feature
(1991)
Starring: Jacques Dutronc, Alexandra London, Gerard Sety
Director: Maurice Pialat
Certificate:
This was an odd one. I admired the demystification of the tormented artists cliche very much. The recreation of the period was convincing and the photography, especially the treatment of light, was mesmerising - which is part of why I found it hard to rate. The pace is very slow and the film feels quite long. Soemtimes I liked this, like the director was trying to say ' this is just life, its just what happens' ( a line spoken by Theo Van Gogh's wife ) but sometimes it became a little trying. All in all I was glad I stuck with it till the end and found myself getting into that way of looking the more I watched.
