Bus 174
on DVD (2002)
Director: Jose Padilha
Certificate:
Maybe I wasn't paying attention but I didn't realise this was a documentary. Knew it was a film based on real events, didn't realise the story was told through actual news footage. Add this then to the list of great recent documentaries. The opening tracking shot from the densely populated poverty of the favelas in the mountains through to the oppulence of Copa Cabana is one of the greatest pieces of cinema I have ever seen. It is absolutely stunning and superbly establishes context of the extremes in Brazilian society. Intelligently compiled, this film establishes the story behind the hijacking of bus 174, with illuminating interviews with the hostages and a study of the life and circumstances of the hostage taker. A fantastic documentary.
