30 years on from its original release, this film still provides a good depiction of life behind bars in a foreign jail, far from home. The plot tells the true story of a young American tourist who is sent to a Turkish prison after attempting to smuggle a small amount of drugs in a moment of madness. The movie focuses on the struggles he faces with the Turkish authorities and his attempts to get back to a normal life. And although containing good debates, the film often resorts to a box ticking excercise - covering too many 'foriegn prison' cliches. Including over dramatical fight scenes, corrupt lawyers and abuse from the villianous Turkish guards. The pooly paced, opening 45 minutes provide little in narrative and fail to achieve an attention grabbing start to his life in prison. However, the second half picks up with a number of twists and turns which lead the film to a decent, yet predictable ending. Despite these areas, the movie features strong individual performances and shows Danny's frustration in an excellent manner. The style in which the film discusses Danny's punishment is also a strong point, but is perhaps soured slightly by its strong anti-Turkish viewpoint.
