Jordan versus Winner! , 24 September 2008
  • The Brave One on DVD (2007)
Starring: Jodie Foster,  Terrence Howard,  Naveen Andrews
    Director: Neil Jordan
    Certificate: Certificate: 18
    Watch now: £2.49
If you can get past the Death Wish references (in fact the entire film is a reference to that particular series of nasty, voyeuristic revenge movies from Michael Winner), this is actually a gripping drama which, apart from a couple of scenes, resists the temptation to wallow in violence and gore.
Jodie Foster, although not infallible, rarely picks a bad script and as movies go, this is not bad at all. Her faultless performance engages us and pulls us subtly into her damaged psyche. Naveen Andrews is wasted, however, as her unfortunate partner and is hardly on the screen at all, relegated to the kind of part usually reserved for a hapless supporting actress. Is Neil Jordan making a point here?
Always the man for putting a neat twist at the end, Jordan does the same in this film but I'm afraid it wasn't as much of a surprise as I'd have liked. The film probably owes more to Helen Zahavi's feminist version of the revenge story, 'Dirty Weekend' surprisingly also directed by Michael Winner which shows us a female revenge hero for a change.
If you like Jordan's films and Foster's performances, this will entertain you and even provide a little food for thought on the nature of post traumatic stress syndrome.
