For a fascinating look into the sub-culture of fanatic game playing look no further! This documentary is the arcade game equivalent of Air Guitar nation, but arguably more enjoyable.

What gripped me about this documentary was the intensity, passion but above all incredible rivalry that exists in this world. The story focuses on the world record score for the game Donkey Kong that we all remember from the 1980s. King of Kong follows the setting of that record in 1982, having it broken in a public performance many years later by Steve Wiebe, only to have it snatched back again via video tape submission that very same day.

The journey turns another corner as the Guinness book of records gets involved to include some scores in their upcoming edition. The documentary is possibly biased in the representation of the main players, but you can't help but feel empathy for Steve Wiebe and his dreams come so close to reality only to have them so sharply snatched away by Billy Mitchell.

One of the most poignant moments in the documentary comes not from the two main rivals, but Steve's own daughter reflecting on her father's dream being in the guinness book of records: “That book ruins peoples lives”.

Colourful real everyday people make this documentary shine.   1 out of 1 person found this review helpful
