Before The Devil Knows You're Dead
on DVD (2007)
Starring: Philip Seymour Hoffman, Ethan Hawke, Albert Finney
Director: Sidney Lumet
Certificate:
The film tells the story of a robbery on a jewlery store. It does not present a straight narriative arc. Instead it shows what different characters were doing before, during and immediately after the robbery. As a result you get the cause and effects of a violent act. The problem is that this style of narrative does not actualy add anything to the story expect for present it as a slow, disjointed film. Seymor Phillip Hoffman acts well in this, as do the rest of the cast which makes it more interesting to watch and the film is well put together. However, heist goes wrong movies are hardly new - Resevior Dogs, Dog Day Afternoon, Heat and City of Industry and contless immemorable TV movies all do the same in slightly diffrent ways. This film adds nothing new to the genre. The rseult was a very well shot and acted movie with a frustratingly slow story, which gets frustrating every time the time changes.
