is there anything more that can be said about batman? well, according to christopher nolan, yes there is - quite a lot more infact. personally i was more than satisfied with tim burton's contributions, batman and batman returns. nolan goes for a realistic approach, a man who teaches himself to fight, with unlimited funds and access to state of the art research, a batman you could almost believe in. the cast is unnecessarily impressive, morgan freeman and gary oldman's talents are utterly wasted on the one dimensional characters they play. i assume these will be developed in the sequals. cillian murphy however, probably steels the film and is involved in some genuinely creepy moments. liam neeson, who for some reason is not mentioned in the credits, gives a sturdy performance opposite bale's batman. bale himself plays the role with integrity, and yet seems unwilling to embrace the character fully. for this reason i found it hard to care about him one way or another. there is little wit or humour in this film apart from the occasional one liner, but there are no knowing winks as in the burton movies. this is a film that takes itself very seriously. there are some spectacular set pieces, one in particular that involves thousands of bats swirling around the stationary bale as he confronts his inner demons. the depiciton of gotham itself is perfection, and rivals the cityscapes of blade runner, not an easy thing to do. i feel i may have been a little harsh on a movie that on the whole i actually enjoyed, but i still can't bring myself to award it more than three stars.
