About me: I have a deep and profound respect for sharks… any kind, don’t care how big or small. It’s not particularly a machismo driven thing. I just find them aesthetically beautiful and noble creatures. I am a faithful member of the Shark Trust and would like to spend my middle years helping in their conservation. I am vegan. This is purely for anti-speciesist reasons (Speciesism is the idea that being human is a good enough reason for human animals to have greater moral rights than non-human animals). It’s also because I have an all round fondness for the trad. farmyard animals and most other kinds of wildlife, excluding the following: dolphins, smaller forms of monkeys (the cappacins, the makaks etc – ALL evil!), guinea pigs, cats. I live in the St Andrews area of Bristol with my girlfriend, Oriel, and 3 other girls. Whilst this arrangement can be somewhat trying, on the whole I enjoy living with them plus the house I live in has outstanding views across Bristol and the surrounding countryside which is enhanced by the fact there is access to the roof. Sadly, being on the roof freaks me right out so I take in the view whilst sitting on the steps up to the house like Carrie Bradshaw. Only a teensy bit more manly. I spend much of my time watching films. A small selection of my favourites include: ‘Labyrinth’, ‘Dune’, ‘Mulholland Drive’, ‘Eraserhead’, ‘Man Bites Dog’, ‘Withnail & I’, ‘Last of the Mohicans’, ‘Silence of the Lambs’, ‘Symapthy for Mr Vengeance’, ‘Pi’, ‘Headwig and the Angry Inch’, ‘Dead Ringers’, ‘The Company of Wolves’, ‘Interview With a Vampire’, ‘Dracula’ (come on! It was so enthusiastic!), ‘Goodfellas’, ‘The Godfather’ trilogy, ‘The Star Wars’ trilogy (original and un-messed around with), ‘Indiana Jones’ (the original ones, none of this crystal skull malarkey), ‘Delicatessen’, ‘City of Lost Children’, ‘Lars and the Real Girl’, ‘The Cook, the thief, his wife and her lover’, ‘Wonderland’, ‘Carrington’, ‘Rushmore’, ‘The Royal Tenenbaums’, ‘The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou’, ‘The Darjeeling Limited’, ‘Hidden (‘Cache’)’, ‘Funny Games’, ‘American Werewolf in London’, ‘Pan’s Labyrinth’, ‘Hellraiser’, ‘Naked’ and a whole host of others. I really am eclectic and diverse. On to music… Again, my taste is pretty diverse. On the whole, at the moment, I’m quite in to The Magnetic Fields album ‘69 Love Songs’, quite like The Fleet Foxes although they’re a bit polite and I have a general love of David Byrne and Talking Heads. Would love to go and see David Byrne when he’s at Bristol in March next year. He’s doing a show of David Byrne/Brian Eno songs which is an exciting prospect considering the fact that those albums are truly excellent and groundbreaking (‘Remain in Light’, ‘My Life in the Bush of Ghosts’, ‘More Songs About Buildings and Food’, ‘Fear of Music’). It’s like going to a concert knowing that the band will only be playing their good songs rather than potentially rubbish new material etc. My main passion in terms of music lies in electronic music. I like techno, electro, dub techno, some forms of break beat, experimental, ambient, general electronic glitch and most other forms of electronica. Artists I like include the following: Autechre, (early, non-rubbish) Orb, (early, non-rubbish) Orbital, Rhythm and Sound, Vladislav Delay, Juan Atkins, Rob Hall, Kevin Saunderson, Surgeon, Gescom, pretty much anything on the Basic Channel label, Monolake, Deadbeat, Aphex Twin (and his many other guises), Luke Vibert, RAC, KLF, Renegade Soundsystem, James Ruskin, Ian O’Brian, Jeff Mills, Susumu Yokota, Team Doyobi, aek, LFO, Push Button Objects, Funkstorrung, Digitonal, Tactile Soul, Posthuman, Ardisson, (early, non-rubbish) Black Dog, Plaid, Photek, Jega, DJ Food, Keith Fullerton-Whitman, Phillip Jeck, Jan Jalineck, Claro Intelecto, FZV, ADJ, Shackleton, Kansas City Prophets, (early non-rubbish) Amon Tobin, Neil Landstrumm, Damien Schneider (Bristol based DJ who plays very energetic and danceable techno – I would highly recommend checking him out, he never fails to be excellent!) and lots of other acts which you more than likely will not have heard of. I try to write music on my laptop using Logic Pro, am attempting to learn how to DJ using Ableton Live but have a very battered set of vinyl decks and a fancy mixer if and when all else fails… Nothing like coming home from work and subjecting the house to lots of unnecessary noise.
