If you are an allotmenteer there is much to enjoy in this gentle comedy. You will recognise the various characters from the proto-fascist and racist through the nice but ineffectual to the the dreamy romantic, who must exist in all allotments. I know they do in mine. Unfortunately, the characters are underdeveloped, plot lines are confused and many strands if the story just fizzle out. This film could have had a lot to say about native attitudes to other nationalities, the plight of asylum seekers, the cynicism of big business and the healing power of horticulture. It seems unsure of which of these it is about, and in the end is about not very much at all. This is a great pity, because there are genuinely moving and enjoyable moments, but in the end it feels like a lost opportunity.
