Good singing, terrible production , 25 September 2008

    I was really looking forward to this. It is one of my favourite operas and this particular production includes some excellent singers. Musically it is fine apart from some wayward tempi from Harnoncourt. However this is an extremely irritating, unnecessarily gimmicky production with which the singers are clearly uncomfortable. I like to see attempts to revitalise classic works but this just doesnt work. What an earth was the point of the wandering angel? It seems to me a typical example of an opera director massaging his ego at the expense of art. I am surprised Harnoncourt went along with this. The opus arte ROH dvd with Mia Persson in the role of Susanna is, by contrast, truly excellent.   2 out of 2 people found this review helpful
