(500) Days of Summer

As Jean-Luc Godard famously observed, "Every film should have a beginning, a middle and an end - but not necessarily in that order."

This is a love story – or not, depending on who you believe and where you check out. The excellent Joseph Gordon-Levitt is Tom, who writes greeting cards for a living. Adorable Zooey Deschanel is (wait for it) Summer, who gets a job at the same firm. With The Smiths in common – and having passed the karaoke test with flying colours – they both think it would be fun to hang out together.

The relationship is complicated, though, by Summer’s caution that she’s not looking for a boyfriend and she doesn’t believe in love. Tom sees things differently…

It sounds like a story you’ve seen and heard a hundred times before. But the filmmakers – first time director Marc Webb comes from pop videos; screenwriters Scott Neustadler and Michael Weber previously collaborated on The Pink Panther 2, of all things – use this very familiarity to extract a fresh angle or three.

The movie’s chief distinction is in its construction. Taking the 500 days conceit as a starting point, the film skips back and forth across the course of the relationship, jumping from (for example) day 35 back to day one, then forward a week, zipping up to day 420, and back, and forth, and so on.

It’s a very clever ploy, allowing us to see the couple really sparking one minute, and going their separate ways the next. And more to piquantly, vice versa: Tom goofs around in IKEA and glumly observes that his joke falls flat… It’s only 20 minutes later that we learn he was echoing a gambit from a year previously, when the two of them had a blast spoofing the perfect couple in the same store.

(500) Days of Summer: Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel

The other original ploy here concerns the end; not of the movie, but the relationship. Rom-coms are fashioned after fairytales, they nearly all subscribe to the happily ever after… It’s not giving away too much to say that (500) Days of Summer works up a smart variation on that cliché too (after all, no Summer lasts forever). As Tom says, “this is not a love story.” Or if it is, it’s a lop-sided one. Refreshingly, though, while we basically get Tom’s side of the story, that’s not to say he’s always in the right. There’s more to it than that.

This is a love story - or not, depending on who you believe...

The movie is tricked up with loads of visual panache by Marc Webb – who is confident enough to try whatever it is that pops into his head, it seems, including a delicious song and dance number and an inspired split-screen sequence contrasting a reconciliation as Tom imagines it will be with the very different reality.

Buoyed by two of America’s most charming young actors, this would seem to be a complete winner… Except that not all of Webb’s ideas are equally solid, and there are moments that are just too cute for comfort. Tom’s job at the gift card company, for example – that’s a hook that rightfully belongs in a Sandra Bullock vehicle.

All the same, this is a fresh lick of paint on a genre that was beginning to feel very tired. A deserving sleeper at the US box office too.

    Go and See It!

This is sweet, funny and unpredictable. I saw it at a free screening and loved it. The cast are great, the story line is funny, charming and horribly true, and the soundtrack is fab!

Sooo much to love a brilliant film

Different, witty, observant, simply one of the cutest films you will get to see. Awkward and unlucky in love Tom (Joseph Gordon Levitt) crosses paths at work with Summer Finn (Zooey Deschannel) and his resulting fortunes of the heart take a turn for the better / or perhaps worse as the case may turn out to be. Chronichling his roller coaster 500 days with summer this is a real gem of a film, justifiably enhanced by a stunning soundtrack. And what a talent the Deschannels are, sister of (Bones) Emily Deschannel, and Zooey herself a talented singer songwriter and the She half of 'She and Him' (check out their version of the Smiths 'Please Please let me get what I want' hidden in the film) - All in all a fantastic film Loved EVERY minute.

    Not a chick flick!

This film is laugh out loud funny.

The Authors note at the start set the tone for the film. Not just for girls, (500) Days of Summer holds a certain charm and originality and it is great to watch a guy go through the emotions that are traditionally associated with the female of the species.

The soundtrack compliments the film perfectly and I can't wait to buy it.

    Well worth a watch.

    A rather unusual love story.....

I REALLY like this film. It's rare to get a film that is devoid of corny mush. This film explores the concept of love, and allows a glimpse into the reality that even those men and women that 'don't want anything serious' are not immune to be hit by love hard and deep when the right person comes along and pulls at the heart strings!.The actors were really well selected, the soundtrack was absolutely fab and the plot will ring true for many men and women out there. The only thing I think could have been done better is the way the sequence of flashbacks jumped all over the place(from day 400 to day 2 and so forth, it got really jumbled with a lack of continuity to it) This movie was funny and warm and it was refreshingly exciting from the usual stuff Hollywood releases.Watch this, you'll be walking with a smile on your face ! Who knows maybe like Hansen's character you too will burst out in song and dance in public and see a very young Harrison Ford when you glimpse your reflection in a car window too!

PS. As the movie narrator says This movie is NOT a love story, so perhaps I should mention that in case the title misleads anyone (LOL).

    Brilliant.

This film is full of quirky, funny, charming, touching and relatable moments that easily make it one of the best films of the year. The back-and-forth structure works brilliantly, showing how what was once cute and funny has since become tired and predictable, and it's these different little ways of doing things that really make (500) Days Of Summer a joy to watch, like the 'Expectations' and 'Reality' split screen or the song and dance number, a scene which is a particular highlight. It perfectly captures that feeling of a rare good day when everything goes right and you just feel like dancing! Everything about the film is spot on and relatable and it ends on a funny, stupid little joke and a knowing glance at the camera that simply adds to its charm. On second viewing I suspect this may just become a 5 star classic.

The best film of 2009 by far

I didn't quite know what to expect when I went to see this film. But it was absolutely fantastic. It's a rare occasion when I don't want a film to come to an end.

It's put together really well without the usual much and lots of interludes and asides and funny little inserts more akin to an episode of 'Spaced' than a hollywood film.

    The must see of 2009

    dissappointing

Im sorry to say but unlike most reviewers, i found this movie too tiresome. I generally tend to prefer long movies but this 97 minute film i found just far too long and lacking in any depth. Yes the take on relationships is welocomingly refreshing and what promises to be new and insightful fails miserably and offers a description of a short-lived lustful relationship packaged as a quest for love...personally I think it would have been helpful and more relatable if you had greater insight of each cahracter and could form a more sincere emotional bond to them.

    Refreshing change

This film is a refreshing change to all the usual, slightly boring, romantic comedies that we have been seeing recently. the script was funny whilst still keeping strictly to the plot. also, what made it different was its unusual way of flitting back and to in time. this can be risky but worked really well in this film. two thumbs up!
