Borat was always going to be a tough act to follow, and Sacha Baron Cohen's second all-out assault on decency and decorum feels a little anti-climactic...

.... even if there are still half a dozen sequences you’ll be talking about the next day.I suspect you already know Brüno is a flamboyantly homosexual Viennese fashionista who high-tails it to the USA to become Austria’s most famous export since Adolf Hitler.

Brüno is not what queer activists would call a positive role model. An egomaniac obsessed with fame, fashion and sex, he’s your homophobe’s gay stereotype. The Austrian accent only makes it vörse. Like Borat, he probes the limits of his interviewees’ civility, but this probably tells us more about Sacha Baron Cohen’s compulsion to shock than it does about them. Yes, it’s funny when he takes a black baby on a daytime TV show and tells the African-American studio audience he’s named the kid “OJ”, but their outrage is understandable.

Unsuccessful stabs at vörld domination include acting (he’s fired from a bit part as a juror on The Medium), a celebrity interview show, a sex tape with Presidential candidate Ron Paul, and a humanitarian intervention to broker peace in “Middle Earth”.

Deterred by these abject failures, Brüno works out that maybe he’s the problem and straightens himself out with the counsel of two Evangelical “gay converters”, a short stint in the US Army, and a trip to a swingers’ party.

No one who saw Borat will have forgotten the nude wrestling scene – no matter how hard you may have tried. There’s more skin on display here. Brüno is inordinately proud of his cheeks, and an animated in-your-face penis shot will sort out the men from the boys. A romantic montage celebrating Brüno’s love life with a diminutive Filipino is probably as close to gay-porn as most heteros are going to get.

Bruno: Sacha Baron Cohen

On this evidence it’s not easy testing taboos in 2009. Wherever Brüno turns he seems to be following in someone else’s footsteps. A hunting trip with the gun lobby? Michael Moore did that. Peace talks in Israel? That was Morgan Spurlock. Gay converters? Didn’t director Larry Charles already go there with Bill Maher in last year’s Religulous? Meanwhile his love-hate relationship with his assistant, Lutz (Gustaf Hammarsten) only highlights how similar the new film’s trajectory is to Borat.

A mixed bag, then: very funny in patches, occasionally shocking, but underwhelming as a whole.

Unlike the Kazakh, or indeed Ali G, Brüno doesn’t get much out of his subjects. Even B list celebrities seem wised up these days. Paula Abdul is coaxed into sitting on a Mexican as she chats about her humanitarianism, but even she skitters soon enough. Brüno visits a spiritualist and communes orally with Milli Vanilli… we may admire SBC’s mimetic skills, but wind up sympathizing with the spiritualist who suffers this in silence and sends him on his way with a curt Good luck.

Some sketches do hit closer to home. A series of interviews with stage moms and dads who blithely sign up their babies to work with hornets, wasps, dead or dying animals, antiquated heavy machinery and sundry toxic substances is a bone fide jaw-dropper. And the stunt by which Brüno ultimately achieves the fame he craves does something to validate his transgressive tactics, finally nailing the gay-bashers where it hurts.

A mixed bag, then: very funny in patches, occasionally shocking, but underwhelming as a whole.

    Please do not watch Bruno.

To be honest I think half a star is generous. This is the first film I have ever reviewed as I wanted to warn people never to watch it. I have never been offended by a film but Bruno broke this trend. I watched it to the end to ensure that I can tell my friends that there were no funny parts. The main attempt of humour was seeing Bruno's cock for about 20 mins of the film. An utterly offensive and disgusting film with no morals.

    Shockingly funny

Anyone expecting the Borat level of shock-factor will be in for a surprise as Bruno goes far beyond the standard of taste that film stayed within! Outrageously funny from the start, it early on sets the level of shock with a brief series of scenes of the sex acts he gets up to with his young companion. It is truely a film where you laugh whilst also knowing that, perhaps, you shouldn't really find it funny. But there is one slight flaw in the film...

You can tell that much more of it was scripted than the antics in Borat, with the real-life moments being scattered a bit thinner this time. This is likely down to how high-profile Baron-Cohen has become over the past few years, that even under his various disguises he is recognisable. It becomes apparant throughout the film that, as genius as this type of stunt-filmmaking is, Cohen will be unlikely to craft a new creation to run the same kind of faux-documentary as Borat, Ali G, and Bruno have done in various films and TV shows. Perhaps it is as well, as there is no way he could top the antics in Bruno without finding himself shot or stabbed by an angry mid-American mob (seriously, watch the reaction at the cage match and then go read up on it online).

Regardless of this slight quibble (and can something being written to be funny really be considered a bad thing?) Bruno is hilariously funny, shockingly in bad taste, and disgustingly over-the-top. About half way into the film we get a scene of what can only be described as a dancing & talking penis. If you are not laughing by this point, just give up and go watch something else as it is obvious the film is not for you.

    Borat really was sooo 2006!

I watched a preview of this last night and i have to say it lived up to the hype. Hilarious, horrifying, blasphemous, irreverent, moronic, lavatorial and incredible. There are a few flat spots however and i am unconvinced that nobody was in on the gag, unlike Borat.

SBC is undoubtedly a creative and comedy genius and has balls of steel. He frequently puts Bruno in situations where others would not dare (or would want) to tread. There are moments when you genuinely fear for his safety. On the whole it delivers. If you didnt like Borat, stay away!

    Not the best...

I can try all day to think of good things to write about this but there are none, this film redefined for me what a bad movie is, by bad movie I mean a movie where no imagination, humour or inteligence has gone into the writing and planning, and no talent or comic ability has gone into the performance. It is painful to watch Bruno follow the same script as Borat just in a different accent, he offends a wide range of nationalities, religions and ethnic groups and has a good old go at Americans for a change, but they shine in comparison to his vulgar lacklustre interviews. I cant wait to see what he does next, I suggest he offends someone within their reach so we can be entertained by insulted interviewees getting revenge.

    Refreshlingly Irreverent!

I'm a massive fan of Baron-Cohen. Although he has slowly gained recognition throughout his career, he will, (I think) in the future be considered a leading, ground-breaking pioneer in socially relevant comedy. If I had to describe him in a word as an artist I would call him'ballsy', simply because he treads where no one has gone before. He doesn't just make us laugh, but he shines a spotlight on our reactions and our beliefs and preconceptions. And for this he is brilliant! To make the public laugh takes talent, but in the context that he makes us laugh, it's just pure genius! It is a fine line between what he does:if he gets it wrong then there is nothing funny about what he does, (but that never happens)but this is where Baron Cohen's genius shines through. Personally I preferred his character Borat, because there was something quite loveable and endearing about the character. But then again I liked Ali G too. I think it's hard to compare his characters as they are all so different, but for me personally I liked Borat.Don't get me wrong, Bruno is funny and shocking, but the storyline seems to follow that of Borat's(go to America in search of something, runs into obstacles, then eventually finds what he's after).Baron-Cohen has set the bar pretty high for himself: I mean how do you top Ali G? With Borat. Supposedly better than Borat? Bruno. Life after Bruno? Who knows. He certainly doesn't have to prove his genius. It's just a real treat to find a comedian that makes me laugh and challenges me at the same time, without coming across as self serving and full of himself.

However, alot of his bag of tricks involved him not being recognised, when he did a 'candid camera on the public' but this is becoming harder to do with more people knowing who he is. With all his personas and especially Bruno, you never get the sense that he's a straight guy playing a gay guy. As an actor he completely becomes the character.

I found the scene of Lutz and his Straight Dave character really shocking inside the fight cage, not because two gay guys were making out but rather the explosive and amazingly aggressive reaction to their display from the public! Absolutely priceless!

I generally think that people who take offense at his material need to look very carefully at themselves and their beliefs,(it's certainly cheaper and more fun than going through Therapy!) because Baron-Cohen is irreverent, but he has never come across to me as being offensive in a crass way, unnecessary or pointless way. Can't wait for his new creation/project!

    ha ha

From the very beginning to the very end of this film I was laughing out loud and it seemed the whole cinema joined in. Utterly hilarious although i would say if you are easily offended then this really isn't a film for you. As always with Baron Cohen hes a genius at shocking you with the peoples genuine views and here it is demonstrating how ludicrous some people people are and the measures they will go to just to attain fame. The only thing that disappointed me was at the end of the film I wanted more

    Bruno

Much of the comedy here comes from people's reactions but, unfortunately, so much of it is staged that anything that may be real is undermined.

I also feel that Borat did a nice job of exposing other people's racism where as this movie is generally Sasha Baron Cohen being as outrageous as possible to force a reaction out of people - making the whole thing feel less genuine and barely a cut above your average hidden camera show.
