Cedar Rapids

Ed Helms? You will know him as Stu from The Hangover and Andy in the US version of The Office: tall, long-faced, and a long way from hip.

Helms hasn’t headlined a movie before, and isn’t likely to challenge George Clooney for any parts soon, but he’s a good fit as a straight arrow small town boy who’s never moved away or grown up in this indie comedy from Miguel Arteta (Youth in Revolt; The Good Girl).

Tim is an insurance salesman, of course, and proud to work for a local firm, “Brown Star”, keeping things slow and steady, which is how he likes them. He isn’t quite a 40 Year Old Virgin, he’s carrying on a relationship with his ex-teacher (Sigourney Weaver), but he is so anxious to make an honest woman of her she may well be his first girlfriend.

The unexpected passing of a far more flamboyant colleague jerks Tim out of his established orbit. His boss sends Tim to the annual insurance broker convention in Cedar Rapids, where Brown Star is in the hunt for a much-coveted third successive triple diamond agency rating. That Cedar Rapids represents the fast lane to Tim says a lot about where he comes from. Given that he’s never flown before, and in fact he’s never even checked into a hotel before, Tim might seem an unlikely candidate for the job. But the convention is run by a conservative Christian organization, Tim’s kind of people. Just steer clear of Dean Ziegler, the boss advises him. Ziegler (John C. Reilly) turns out to be his roommate…

John C. Reilly

If I mentioned booze, drugs and prostitutes, you would probably guess that Tim gets mixed up in them along the way – and you would be absolutely right. Cedar Rapids doesn’t break any new ground when it comes to putting the rube through the ringer. At times it feels like a knock-off of the sharp Midwestern satires Alexander Payne has made: Election, Citizen Ruth and About Schmidt (in fact, after writing that, I found out that Payne was one of the producers here), with more than a smattering of Judd Apatow raunch thrown in for good measure.

Still, when it isn’t painting him as ridiculously naïve, the movie does allow that Lippe has good qualities: he’s no cynic, honest, and yes, after hearing his heartfelt tribute to the profession, you probably would want to buy insurance from this man.

The movie is dominated by John C. Reilly doing another expert variation on his familiar character, the obnoxious boor with a heart of gold.

Anne Heche and Isiah Whitlock (from The Wire) help ground the comedy in realistic characters and sympathetic observation, and Helms is fine too, but the movie is dominated by John C. Reilly doing another expert variation on his familiar character, the obnoxious boor with a heart of gold. Reilly could play it in his sleep but he’s easily the funniest thing in a flick that raises smiles but struggles to convert them to laugh out loud moments.

It’s an easy watch, but it’s not something you’re likely to feel passionately about one way or the other.

John C. Reilly steals the show in this quirky comedy about a naïve small-town insurance salesman who finds himself out of his depth in the 'big city'...

As an insurance professional - I can recognise a lot of the beaviours here in this movie. Well, not really but it does strike various chords. Great little film that captures the good guy doing the right / wrong things and winding up if not with the girl (2) then with a whole eye opening outlook on life. Really enjoyable - Love John C Reilly. Brilliant.

  • A fun and amusing movie which reps will particularly enjoy

Funny movie if short of superb. This will appeal to anyone who has been on a sales conference or industry convention who will see bits of different personalities in the film taken to excess. It will not necessarily appeal to those who rent it because they liked the Hangover. Yes, it is silly and over the top but that is part of its charm, with an element of farce. You can't but help root for Tim Helms' character, Tim Lippe. The relationship between Lippe and his mature lover played by Sigorney Weaver is amusing. John Reilly creates some enjoyable slapstick moments and Isiah Whitlock does well in a counter-stereotype role as the straight guy.

Real true life story with no heart strings attached. Couple of moments are a bit boring, but that just makes it that much more real. Enjoyed the jokes.

This is a sweet but average film. It is quite funny in parts, and the main character seems very simple and childish in his way. However beneath the exterior is a real man

This is an ok film to pass the time but nothing special. The story has been done before and if you fall asleep you should be able to fill in any blanks

  • A wasteful shame

With such a great cast I thought this can't go wrong. All have had their comedy muscles flexed and have come out fighting......I can only presume that there was some mass drugging during production of this film as it is as far from a comedy as you can get. It looks like a comedy, in fact, with the sound off, it looks great....then you turn the sound back on and all you can hear are tumbleweeds as the deathly silence of mundane script writing and muted performances make your ears and eyes bleed. Ed Helms relies on his teeth (stupid grin throughout) to deliver his performance whereas Anne Heche and John C. Reilly are desperate to get something going but unfortunately there is NOTHING to work with. All in all a shame, a wasteful shame......and 80 odd minutes of my life I will never get back.
