End of Watch

Some films tread the safe line of what we've seen before. Risk averse. But bankable.

Some films slash their budget for freedom and originality. Pioneering. But dangerous.

And some films take the familiar and drag it by the throat to new heights, new depths, new breadths.

End Of Watch

Director David Ayer
Genres Drama
Run time 109 mins Certificate 15

Punched up by the star presence of Jake Gyllenhaal, End of Watch is one of the latter. And spectacularly so.

LAPD street cops Brian Taylor (Gyllenhaal) and Mike Zavala (Michael Peña – Shooter, Tower Heist) fall afoul of a vicious drugs cartel when they seize cash and guns on a routine traffic stop.

With Taylor documenting everything on camcorders and lapel lenses, their next night patrol becomes a descent into an urban heart of darkness.

Plaudits, possibly even awards nominations, will likely rain Gyllenhaal’s way, but Peña is equally deserving. Their partner banter is authentic, funny and naturalistic, and this real-feel quality is a vein of quality coursing through the entire film.

Buddy movies, we know. Found footage films, we know. South Central LA, we (think we) know.

Michael Pena & Jake Gyllenhaal

Here, writer-director David Ayer raises the bar on the lot. Including his own previous efforts. This is more tightly told that Street Kings, more intense than Harsh Times, stronger than Dark Blue, with an even sharper screenplay than Training Day.

And Ayer doesn’t let the home-video element restrict him or distract us – it’s an immersive device, wielded with skill and without limitation.

Stunned silence is a common reaction as the film fades to black. Applause too. Because after End of Watch, the street cop crime thriller ought never to be the same again. Bravo, Delta Alpha. Bravo!

Writer-director David Ayer raises the bar with this found footage style movie, starring hot property Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Pena as street cops in downtown L.A.

Excellent film if you can cope with its hand held camera style. Jake Gyllenhaal is very good as police officer Brian Taylor although you wonder if the real L A police would be as sensitive as in his portrayal of one.

There have been so many cop movies so that the angle of this one from a ride along perspective was at least a little different. This dramatical representation of life as a policeman in L A shows the dangers involved in such a job and the criminals in this film were played with zeal.

Brilliant, characters really grab you and draw you further into the story line. Plenty of events that weren't expected kept it interesting for me. All in all an intriguing film.

Entertaining, pretty dark and the two leads have a believable friendship (although I thought Michael Pena's character was a bit trite). It wasn't as great or as original as film reviewers led me to expect though.

  • Dire Plot with plenty for those that like bad music and foul language

I am amazed that this has such a good review. The film is full of bad language that delivers nothing to the at best weak plot. Most of the film is filled with trivial dialogue between the two lead parts with occasional busts of violent action. Part of the film attempts to make a feature out of amateurish camera work which only reinforces the poor quality of the tale. The two lead parts appeared to have talent dreadfully let down by poor overall plot and tatty script. This is one of the most dire films that I have seen in recent years.

  • Swear as much as you can

If you enjoy 30 fxxxks per minute then rent this, if not, like me, you can not tolerate such unecessary swearing then don't. I had to eject it after 15 minutes due to being oversaturated with swear words, and I am no prude, I worked in a factory.

This is not a good film. Unrealistic, pointless and frankly boring. One or two tense moments give a glimmer of the potential this film could of had but sadly doesn't follow through.
