Like Crazy

Unscripted and off the cuff, writer/director Drake Doremus' Like Crazy is a refreshingly honest take on long-distance love, and boy does it pull at the heart strings.

Boasting a talented young line-up; British actress, Felicity Jones (Chalet Girl), Anton Yelchin (Star Trek) and Jennifer Lawrence (X Men: First Class), it’s easy to see why this film has opened to critical acclaim. Winner of the Grand Jury and Special Jury prizes at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, Doremus’ drama follows a young couple as they struggle to make their romance work, oceans apart.

After a passionate summer fling, exchange student Anna (Jones) is keen to keep her relationship with Jacob (Yelchin) alive, so she stays in the U.S. breaking the terms of her student visa. But when she is forced to return to the UK, their relationship comes under some serious strain.

In a bid to re-ignite their passion Anna attempts to visit Jacob but customs don’t sympathise with the lovers’ heartache and quickly put her back on a plane to England. The story continues with Jacob clocking up air miles travelling back and forth to the UK, while they try to fix Anna’s immigration issues. But things become more interesting when Sam (Lawrence) and Simon (Charlie Bewley) arrive on the scene. Without giving too much away, let’s just say this love square gets pretty sticky at times.

The last time a film explored the true, heart-breaking nature of relationships wasn’t all that long ago; the Oscar-nominated, Blue Valentine, was commended for its telling and raw depiction of a couple’s highs and lows. Michelle Williams and Ryan Gosling lived together to get the right balance between feeling besotted and suffocated.

Anton Yelchin & Felicity Jones

Likewise, Yelchin and Jones were open to less conventional ways of filmmaking. The actors were given free reign with the scenes, improvising much of the dialogue, while Doremus kept the cast on their toes, by leaving the camera on inbetween shots to capture their natural conversations. This blurring of the lines between reality and fiction, gives the film an authentic, and at times uncomfortably voyeuristic, feel. The audience are invited to watch the most intimate aspects of Anna and Jacob’s relationship, from their inner most pleasures to their painful insecurities.

Like Crazy plays on the pangs of true love, shying away from any clichéd Hollywood gloss, it gives this romantic drama a real edge.

Most films of this type I can take or leave and are instantly forgettable but there was something very different about this one. It had a level of realism that most films about relationships are missing. The behaviour of the characters was very recognisable and true to how people behave in an impossible situation, you start to fight and resent the one person you shouldn't be fighting with because there is no-one else to blame. Plus the ending was very good, it's not a Hollywood ending but that's not to say it's a happy or a sad ending, just one very much based in reality.

The film is not a romantic comedy as viewers may first imagine it to be. The film actually portrays young love and how dificult it is to maintain a long distance relationship. I thought that the acting was excellent and very natural. As the characters journeyed into adulthood and realised that they could not get away with breaking rules the weight of their sorrow and frustration was evident. The ending was realistic and not set up to make the viewer feel good. The film pace is slow enabling the characters to develop and so it may not be a film for people who prefer action and drama.

  • A new favourite..Natural and Heartwarming

Admittedly I'm a complete lover of predictable, heart warming chick flicks and expected this film to be much of the same. However I was completely drawn into the very real nature of the characters lives, relating to their experiences. The emotions portrayed seemed very natural and it was good to see new and in my opinion underrated faces on the screen. The story didn't follow the same cookie cutter chick flick storyline. I didn't find it predictable or boring, instead it had my full attention from start to finish. Would definitely watch again and have already recommended this to my friends!

Gosh, what a sad excuse of a film. The two leads are so annoying it is impossible to warm to them, especially the girl who's constantly going around with a long face. Serious issues are only touched upon to concentrate on a boring, predictable story-line.

Unlike the sponsored reviewer's above, my heart strings weren't tweaked let alone pulled by this tale of self-deluded and, what is worse, duplicitous

    'lovers'.

Much has been made of the improvisatory nature of the dialogue, but this is an indulgent technicality if the storyline and its characters have low audience engagement.

The cinematographic standard was high, however, with some genuinely innovative shots and scenes.

Supporting roles were really well played, but the two leads were really difficult to relate to.

The plot offered an opportunity to critique exploitative visa and immigration regulations, but this aspect of the story was let slip as the 'romantic drama' unfolded.
