Moonrise Kingdom

Wes Anderson has provided the gentlest curtain-raiser you could hope for.

Charming, amusing, whimsical and all those other words we use when we’re talking about Anderson’s films, Moonrise Kingdom takes us to an island community in 1965, where two misfit 12-year-olds (Jared Harris, Kara Hayward) fall crazy-in-love and run away into the wild. Well, as far as you can run on an island.

He’s an orphan scout who smokes a pipe. She’s a stylish moppet who reads fantasy novels about orphans. Chasing them are half of Hollywood: Ed Norton and Harvey Keitel as scout masters, Bruce Willis as the island police chief, Frances McDormand and Bill Murray as the girl’s parents, Tilda Swinton as social services…

Playfully lensed like a French New Wave comic-book, pepped by Alexandre Desplat’s spritely score and over in 90 mins, Anderson’s cute romantic-comedy doesn’t add up to much but glides with a playful mojo that’s takes you with it effortlessly. And you just can’t argue with any movie where Ed Norton gives Harvey Keitel a piggyback.

Beautiful movie. Endearing and charming coming of age love story. It may be a little quirky for some. A joy to watch.

  • Brilliant fable - similar style to Fantastic Mr Fox

Wonderful film - a very enjoyable watch. Not sure why it's a 12 - no nudity, very little violence, a French kiss and a grope... Some of the 1-star reviews are very strange!

Dreadful, pointless and trite film. Targeted at nobody in particular, too childish for adults and too adult for children. Little moral and a weak, almost non existent plot. Emotionally bland.

Typical Wes Anderson. Quirky, engaging and well shot but for me it ran out of steam about half way through. Special mention for the child actors as they where excellent.

Brilliant. Everything you'd expect from a Wes Anderson! If you happen to be anything to do with the Scout movement, it's a must see...... Ignore the bad reviews - if they were stupid enough not to expect quirkiness from this director, then they should stick to Die Hard 8.
