Jackmans a jackass but the boy and his bot got real heart.By Turino (40 reviews) from Bracknell , 13 Oct 2011
[Highly rated reviewer]Its commendable how much of a douchebag a Hollywood star like Jackman is willing to play here. Ok, so there are no points for guessing if Jackmans down on his luck robot boxing promoter Charlie is going to change his ways by the end of the movie. But for a good forty minutes of the film, youll probably find yourself wondering how the hell the director, screenwriter and star are going to make a single audience member give an ounce of sympathy for this most unsympathetic of schmuks.
But in good old Rocky style, you will undoubtedly be cheering on the underdog when it comes to the David vs Goliath robot boxing match that is the climax of the film.
The central relationship between Charlie and his estranged son Max is believable as is the setting of the not-too distant or unfamiliar future. Kids still have daddy issues (especially kids who have dads like Charlie) and all that seems to have changed is that robot boxing is the sport of the future.
The robots are a brilliantly seamless blend of puppetry and CG effects and when Max discovers a battered boxing droid discarded (as he once was by his own jackass dad), the plot kicks into motion.
Its an enjoyable but predictable ride with Dakota Goyo impressive as the justifiably antsy kid. Jackman carries the film with his detestable Dad and a surprisingly convincing character arc. Losts Freckles (Evangeline Lilly) is wasted in a very similar way to her recent cameo in The Hurt Locker. She needs to find a new agent that wont leave her cheering on the action from the side lines.
The robot fights are realistically rendered but its the father-son relationship that makes this film the real deal. Great for families. Its out 14th October.

THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS Show review anywayHideI loved this-unexpected but a really good story and the young actor was fantastic. Hugh Jackman is great and the story is good even though is is basically American Robot Wars with a heart.
When Rocky and Robot Wars Combine!By Lozzatron_and_Mattimus_Prime (13 reviews) , 20 Aug 2013
THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS Show review anywayHideI was REALLY looking forward to watching this film... and that may well be the problem. I have to admit i was a little dissapointed. The idea behind this film is so much better then the execution. It was a good film, it just isn't anything special. However, its Rocky with Robots, its a good family film, that hits you in the heart! Likes 1) Acting, the acting in this film was solid with all the major characters being believable especially Hugh jackman who did a fantastic job. 2) Special Effects, thhe CGI used to create the robots was top notch and the result was fantastic the robots looked real the moved realistically and the special effects used when they broke was just as good! 3) Idea, As described before the idea of robot boxers ... a larger budget robot wars type thing was great. I also thought the idea of the Father son relationship was a nice touch and made it a great family film. 4) feel good atmosphere, the film had a really positive feel to it and the story was heart warming. Dislikes 1) Storyline, It was unrealistic. Ok..i can hear you starting to say 'Really? its robots? can't you get your head around that?' but i don't mean that i mean.. in a world where robotics is at such i high standard and the quality of the robots is so high. How come there was only ever robots in the boxing ring? and not in any other part of society? Am i really expected to believe that boxing funded the research which drove to the robotic discovery... i think not, but, maybe i am asking to much for a family film, maybe im probing to far. On the whole it was an enjoyable film, i think i just expected it to be ground breaking for some reason and set my standards to high. The acting, special effects and the idea were great. i just think a bit more care being taken on the the writing of the story could have made it so much better. If your after a family film, which is a cross between Rocky and Robot Wars then this is the film for you! watch it, see what you think and i hope your not dissappointed!
Better than expected!By GingerJam (5 reviews) , 03 Aug 2013I wasn't expecting a lot from this film even though I love Hugh Jackman, but was very pleasantly surprised. It had a lot more heart than I thought it would. Hugh Jackman was very convincing as an idiot that turns good and Lily Evangaline is just a great, very underrated, actress. Brilliant!
TIED 5TH GREATEST OF ALL TIME 9.5/10By GARGRX (31 reviews) , 18 Jul 2013+ HUGH JACKMAN'S GREATEST PERFORMANCE OF HIS CAREER TO DATE + OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE FROM DAKOTA GOYO + GREAT FIGHT SCENE'S + ADRENALINE FILLED ACTION + FUNNY MOMENTS + HEART WARMING PLOT + REAL ROBOTS MIXED WITH CGI - PREDICTABLE THIS MOVIE OBLITERATED MY EXPECTATIONS 7 - 8. 2/10. HUGH JACKMAN AND GOYO'S CHEMISTRY ARE OFF THE CHART. THE PLOT IS PREDICTABLE BUT IT'S DONE SO WELL YOU WONT CARE. THE ONLY SLIGHT NIGGLE IS WHILE THE MUSIC IS VERY GOOD ITS NOT GREAT LIKE STAR WARS OR ROCKY IF IT WAS IT WOULD GET 9. 7/10. TIED 5TH GREATEST OF ALL TIME 9. 5/10
