The Hangover

Let's begin at the end: the credits sequence is the funniest, and the most outrageous finale in ages.

I’ve rarely seen an audience sent out on quite such a high. It’s such a spectacular coup, it puts a flattering gloss on a surprisingly ingenious but nevertheless uneven black comedy.

This is the third movie in six months produced from a screenplay by Jon Lucas and Scott Moore, and it’s so much better than either Four Christmases or The Ghosts Of Girlfriends Past that you have to wonder how much of the credit should go to director Todd Phillips (not that his recent track record is exactly stellar: since Old School he’s committed Starsky & Hutch and School for Scoundrels to the remainder bins of DVD history). According to Hollywood gossip he and Jeremy Garelick (The Break-Up) did a substantial but uncredited rewrite.

Whoever may be responsible, something went very right on this one. The cleverly structured script begins three quarters into the story, with Phil (Bradley Cooper) phoning Doug’s fiancée from the middle of the desert outside Las Vegas to confess that the bachelor party got a little out of hand. He’s pretty badly beaten up, and so is her dad’s prized convertible. Worse, though, they won’t be back in time for the nuptuals scheduled that afternoon. They have lost the bridegroom.

Phillips then circles back to show the guys – Phil, Doug (Justin Bartha), Alan (Zach Galifianakis), and Stu (Ed Helms) – taking their leave for Vegas two days earlier.

The Hangover: Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, Zach Galifianakis

Phil is a teacher, cynical, ready for a good time. Stu is a dentist, a square, but a loyal friend. Alan is the odd one out, a weirdo who has only been invited along because he’s Doug’s brother in law. It’s Alan who has the bright idea to lace their booze with drugs. Shortly after they toast a night they’ll never forget, they wake up to find they can’t remember a thing.

There’s a chicken in the bedroom, a tiger in the loo, and a baby in the closet. The suite is trashed. The guys are sick. And Doug… Doug is nowhere.

What’s nice about the movie (I use the term “nice” loosely) is that the more they find out as they try to piece together the clues, the worse things get.

Interesting, too, to see a mainstream comedy by and large bypass the star route.

Obviously this brand of crude guy-comedy (and it is a thoroughly phallocentric movie) is not for everyone, but it’s rare to see one put together with such fiendish glee. Phillips gives the visuals a slick, high gloss sheen, and never allows an ounce of sentimentality to spoil the fun.
Interesting, too, to see a mainstream comedy by and large bypass the star route. You may recognise Bradley Cooper from He’s Just Not That Into You, and Justin Bartha from National Treasure, but neither is a household name. Most studios would probably have earmarked this one for Owen Wilson and Ben Stiller, Seth Rogen and Jason Segel, or a combination along those lines. Instead they’ve gone the cheap route, assembled a cast of promising newcomers, and recognized that the concept (and the trailer) is enough of selling point.

If that was a gamble it appears to have paid off handsomely. The Hangover has opened to excellent business in the US. Rightly so. It’s not a movie I would recommend to my grandmother, or yours, but if you’re at all intrigued by the trailer, know that the movie does not disappoint. And whatever you do, don’t walk out before the end credits.

    Who needs the Frat Pack?

This Comedy is straight out of the top drawer. Directed by Todd Phillips (the same guy as Road trip, old School, and Starsky and Hutch), It's a comedy which relies on script rather than the pull of the actors involved, and believe me it definitely delivers (Imagine Dude wheres my car, but more grown up, funnier and not just for stoners).

For months comedy's have been churned out which have promised so much with regards to the actors involved and the trailers advertised, but after watching them you cant help but feel they were a little over hyped. Whether thats due to the story, The length of the movie, The amount of laughs, or even the idea that it just should have been better (pineapple express, role models, and mall cop, to name a few).

This one, however, has the lot: Love, Loss, and desperation, and without losing its direction (or laughs) towards the end. It's the right Length, the characters are perfect, the jokes are origional and best of all, laugh out loud funny. Admittedly there are some jokes in there which play with the boundaries of decency, and really make you question how sick you must be to laugh (the babys 'hand guestures' and the naked old guy), But thats just the kind of thing that you will talk, and laugh about when your picking the movie apart long after you've left the cinema.

For those of you who rate Old School as an all time comedy classic then you will LOVE this movie. You'll also appriciate the cameo's along the way, Namely the wedding band at the end of the movie (another classic cover to rival 'Turn Around'). But for those of you who have not seen Old School, and like a good comedy, then you are wasting valuable minutes in your life, and you should put it on your 'High Priority' list now. And for those of you who dont like Old School then......well...... i cant help you.......and you should probably give this movie a miss.

All in all, More of the same style of comedy from Todd Phillips, But still Origional and definitely one of his best so far.

    Go and see this Movie.

Offensive, misogynistic and just not funny

Is comedy completely subjective? After watching The Hangover I think it is. The Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw has given the film a very favourable review. Have I missed something between the lines?

Firstly, I thought that nasty blokey comedy had been consigned to the 1990s? Obviously not, as The Hangover is full of it. Secondly, hasn’t this been done before in the stoner comedy, Dude, Where’s My Car? Thirdly, haven’t we moved on from misogynistic movie making? Judging by this film, no. The film’s portrayal of women is very suspect. Heather Mills plays a dumb stripper, whose part is underwritten. The only other woman with a speaking role is a nagging wife who does her best to ruin her partner’s stag weekend and subsequent life. All the other women are shown wandering around a swimming pool half naked. Fourthly, is it just me or is nearly every joke really offensive? Fat people are fat, Chinese people talk funny, breast feeding is gross women’s work and black people are black etc. Fifthly, don’t comedies have narratives anymore? The film is simply a bunch of skits or episodes. One of these episodes includes Mike Tyson, yes, convicted rapist MIKE TYSON, trying to string a sentence together and act! Finally, to find a comedy funny you have to have some sort of investment in the characters, you have to feel for them and care about their predicaments. In the Hangover I didn’t care about any of the characters, the ‘storyline’ or what happened to them. Overall, a 2 hour film that I laughed twice in, one that offended me with its attitudes to everyone that isn’t a white male in their early 30s, and one that bored me.

    Hold-on, Hangover!

If 'funny' is drug use and abuse, alcoholic excess, cameo roles by convicted rapists and homophobic, raceist sterotyping this is your comedy film of the year.

This is an insult to the 15-22 age group it is aimed at.

The continuity errors are countless, the acting ham, the storyline predictable.

    trash

I can't believe the positive press this film has garnered, is this a sign of the dumbed down culture we live in? If I could give this film zero stars I would do. There is nothing new in this film, all old jokes, the characters are not likeable or sympathetic in the slightest (and as a result are totally unfunny) By the end of the film i wanted at least two of the cast to end up being murdered (that would have been funny)

Incredibely poor script, bad writing, shabby acting, I can't believe this movie ever got made.

You want a hangover movie? Watch Very Bad Things or even Superbad .. this is just a poor imitation of a very poor genre of comedy film making.

If you don't get out much and have never had a 'full on' night out then you may get a laugh out of this otherwise save your money and go see something decent. Complete trash with no redeeming factors.

    dumb and vile

There is nothing witty or ingenious about this movie. It is set in a real environment with an unrealistic plot. If you must see this movie, you are much better off switching all your brain cells off.

One of the funniest films I've seen in a long time. Won't be to everyone's taste but it kept my ribs tickled for a few hours.

What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas!

A breath of fresh air! I am a woman and I say enough of boring, corny female rom coms. Bring on the man-com!The problem with these type of films

that have been made in the past is the gross out factor that appeals to men but not a favourite for women. However, this movie manages to get the balance right and it's spot on funny! There was laughter in the cinema throughout the movie and it's just one of those movies that leaves the viewers with a feel good feeling after they've left the cinema. Don't miss this gem, it's well worth a watch!

    Start to Finish Hilarious!

A had my doubts about this film - another guys road trip type movie in Vegas? But I had to take it all back - it was hilarious from start to finish. Each character is exceptionally well performed although the character of Alan was my favourite - this guy did not even need to speak to start me laughing!!! I could not pick out my favourite moment because there were so many! I will definitely be renting this, or even buying when it comes out as immediately after I left the cinema I wanted to go back in to see it again... high praise indeed!

    The Hangover

This is one of the funniest movies i have seen in awhile! Strongly recommended. We laughed from start to finish and were throughly entertained.

4 guys on a bachelor weekend in Vegas, a tiger in the bathroom, a baby in the cupboard?? And no memory of what happened!! Hillarious, good build up and finish.

A movie aimed at both male and female.
