Here's a litmus test for young lovers. If you believe that men are more interested in sports than fine dining (particularly if it's mud wrestling)...

...that they’re more likely to be interested in you if you’re not interested in them… and that a short relationship is the only honest relationship, then you’re already on the same wavelength as Mike (Gerard Butler), the straight-talking cable TV sex therapist who passes for the hero in this mediocre romantic comedy.

Cary Grant he ain’t.

Butler looks paunchy and bleary-eyed – he hasn’t even bothered to shave.

Cast details

So what’s an intelligent woman to do with a guy like Mike? If you’re Abby (Katherine Heigl) – the neurotic and controlling producer who is ordered to put this guy on the air, you wind up hanging on his every word. See, she hasn’t got a clue how to hang on to a guy (her number one goal in life, natch), and when a dreamy doctor moves in next door (Eric Winter), it’s Mike who shows her how to dress for success, keep her mouth shut, and when to put out.

Katherine Hepburn she ain’t.

Heigl, you may recall, famously broke showbiz protocol to suggest that her hit movie Knocked Up was a teeny bit sexist: the boys were fun while the women were shrews.

You may or may not agree with that assessment, but The Ugly Truth seems like a punishment. Heigl’s character is humiliated at every turn. Even before Mike turns up with a job at her station, she’s pilloried on his show for describing a romantic ideal of a man who’s sensitive and caring, cultured and (admittedly) imaginary.

Gerard Butler in The Ugly Truth

In other scenes she is caught hanging upside down from a tree in her nightgown; hiding in her office closet; and furiously rubbing a stain out of the doctor’s crotch – in front of a stadium of baying ball fans.

Then there’s the piece de resistance, a scene shamelessly cribbed from Meg Ryan’s finest moment in When Harry Met Sally: for reasons too contrived to explain, Abby is wearing vibrating panties to a business dinner when the remote control falls into the innocently curious hands of a small boy at a nearby table, who proceeds to send her into multiple orgasms while she attempts to hold up her end of the conversation.

I would caution anyone of a sensitive disposition to give a wide berth to this sorry effort from the director of Monster-in-Law, Robert Luketic.

It’s a ridiculous scene on every level (she wouldn’t make her excuses and head for the ladies’ room?) and quite creepy in the way it turns female sexuality into a toy for boys.

In real life, Mike wouldn’t last a day in a professional TV station, he’d be hauled up for sex discrimination the minute he cracks that he “likes a woman on top”. Here, he gets the ratings and soon enough a potential network promotion. He even gets the moral high ground, proving his essential worthiness by offering sensible advice to his young nephew. Like: don’t watch my show.

In that same spirit, I would caution anyone of a sensitive disposition to give a wide berth to this sorry effort from the director of Monster-in-Law, Robert Luketic. Not just because the sexual politics are dishonest and trite, but – maybe more importantly – because it ain’t funny. (I snickered once, and immediately felt ashamed of myself.)

Katherine Heigl in The Ugly Truth

Legally Blonde and The House Bunny, but this time Nicole Eastman’s scenario proves beyond redemption. Sorry stuff.

    Brilliant!

This film had us laughing from beginning to end, not a boring moment to be seen, and as always a happy ending. I wasn't sure if my hubby would enjoy it as it looked like a bit of a Rom-Com, but it’s definitely one for the guys as well. GO SEE IT!

    A Romantic Comedy About Sex....

This isn't your usual romantic comedy, this is more a comedy about sex than romance. Its basically a film about Abby a TV producer (Katherine Heigl) and a bawdy opinionated presenter with a bit of a swagger (Gerard Butler), who believes women expect too much when looking for a man. He ends up presenting 'The Ugly Truth' on the channel that Abby will be producing. Abby is furious that her boss has taken him on, as she completely disagrees with what he has to say about women and men, and so the story goes...

Sure, this film doesn't have much of a story, but I've gotta say its the best comedy I've seen that lives up to that description 'COMEDY'! that I've seen in while. It was so hysterically funny, I had tears streaming down my face! And it wasn't just me, the whole audience (men and women) were in fits of laughter too. If that isn't enough to get people to see it then I don't know what is.

Nice to see Gerard Butler is getting the opportunity to play a variety of roles rather than being stuck in one genre of film. It proves he is a versatile actor (from playing the Phantom Of The Opera to King Leonidas in 300 to his next film Gamer - where he plays a human computer game avatar set in the future).

I've not seen Katherine Heigl in a film for years, since 'My Father The Hero' infact, where she played opposite a different Gerard (Depardieu). Of course she's been in Film/TV since then, but nothing I've seen. It seems she's particularly good at comedy roles, a bit like Sandra Bullock.

I agree.. The Truth is Ugly!!!

The first 10-15 mins of this film is very slow.

You sit there thinking, 'oh no, what have i let myself into'?!?!

However it turned out i couldn't stop laughing the whole way through the movie with tears streaming down my face. It had some very funny moments in it, ie, vibrating knickers, sexual innuendo.

The story line was extremely original in my opinion and i haven't seen anything like it before!

Katherine Heigl and Gerald Butller were brilliant!

    That's more like it!

Thank goodness Hollywood is starting to churn out more interesting plots for rom coms.Being a woman, I have realised from watching myself and humanity around me in relationships, that perhaps love just boils down to the inherit need we all have as a species to mate. Love is really a very sugar coated version of what a person's biological needs dictate. Men seem to be alot more honest about this whole process but women (because they want a good mate/provider to stick around to look after the offspring and her) obviously look and aim for a greater and more longstanding level of commitment from man, which is where the notion of love comes in. These are observations I have made having observed my behaviour and the bahviour of others relating to love and sex, and it checks out pretty closely with the reality of how things are as compared to what we want them to be. So I saw the trailer and I couldn't wait to see the film. And guess what... it doesn't disappoint. It's light, funny and has a good mixture of everything you'd expect a briilliant rom com to have. Plus it explored some of the observations I've had for a while which was a lovely suprise! Go see this movie or rent it and take your man along.....this is one movie that he is bound to like too!

    Another triumph for Katherine Heigl.

Romantic comedy in which Sacramento, California TV producer Abby Richter (played by Katherine Heigl) is most unhappy when her network hires boorish and misogynist former salesman Mike Chadway (played by Gerard Butler) to be the host of a new show to be aired on the network entitled ‘The Ugly Truth’ in which he lays out the ‘ugly truth’ about what men want from women: not personality and depth of character but looks, looks, looks and sex, sex, sex. Men are simple creatures and they don’t want a deep emotional connection with a woman but merely a woman who looks gorgeous and with whom they can get laid easily and often. Abby is Mike’s producer and is outraged at his opinions and views him as a sexist pig whose show will be the death of the network but when The Ugly Truth turns out to be a ratings winner she is forced to eat humble pie and accept that Mike is good for the network, even though the show goes against everything that she believes in. Abby thinks that Mike is an idiot who doesn’t know anything about sex and relationships but when advice that he gives her enables her to get into a relationship with her handsome next-door neighbour and doctor Colin (played by Eric Winter) she realises that despite Mike’s boorish ways he does seem to know what he is talking about when it comes to how a woman should attract a man. Despite having disliked Mike intensely initially she grows to like him somewhat (although she still holds that he is somewhat of a misogynist pig), especially when she finds out that he has a good relationship with his 10 or so year old nephew to whom he is a father figure. However when it transpires that a major TV network in New York is swooping to poach Mike from Abby’s network because his show The Ugly Truth is just so good, Abby is sent by her boss to intercept him before he appears as a guest on talk show The Late Late Show and convince him to stay at their network for the sake of their ratings. Abby meets Mike at the hotel he is staying at and when she does it transpires that he has turned down the New York job offer so that he can stay in Sacramento and in his nephew’s life, which pleases Abby as now she doesn’t have to swallow her pride and try to convince him to stay at her network. But after an electrifying dance between the two of them on a dancefloor after Mike’s interview Abby and Mike discover that the attraction between them that they have both been trying to deny for some time is just too strong to resist and they end up kissing in the hotel’s elevator. Both embarassed by what has just happened Abby and Mike retreat to their respective hotel rooms. But the normally cocky and womanising Mike is falling for Abby and decides that he is not going to pretend that what happened in the elevator should not have happened and is instead going to admit to Abby his feelings for her. But when he gets to Abby’s room, the boyfriend that he got her into a relationship with Colin has showed up to surprise her and answers the door, forcing Mike to lie and say that he showed up to tell Abby about changes to their flight arrangements. Mike leaves but Abby pursues him and catches up with him in the corridor as she wants to know what the kiss between them in the elevator meant: she is seemingly falling for him as well. But then the cocky and misogynist front that Mike usually portrays to women and to the world is revealed as existing because he has been hurt by women in the past and is afraid of getting his heart broken again. Mike then rejects Abby and denies that the kiss meant anything and that he wants to be with her and walks away. But Abby now knows that she wants to be with Mike and so splits up with Colin, citing as the reason that the version of herself that she had been presenting to him was not the real her but a contructed version that Mike had said that she should present to Colin if she wanted to snare him. The next day at work, Abby discovers that Mike has quit her network to work for a local rival network: it seems so that he doesn’t have to see her. Abby’s boss informs her in no uncertain terms that she needs to get Mike back on their network within a week or the loss of ratings may mean the end of their network. So Abby comes up with a clever plan to attempt to get Mike back onto The Ugly Truth and back into her life by indirectly criticising him and his fear of relationships on TV, hoping to appeal to his pride. With Abby going all out to get her man and Mike considering whether to succumb to his ego and speak to her again, will true love prevail?

Comments: this was a most promising film. Katherine Heigl’s character, although suffering from a few wobbles, generally makes for a most pleasing heroine and Gerard Butler is also excellent as our hero who turns out to be more than just the sexist womanising pig he initially appears to be. The film has a lot of insightful observations about sex and relationships and made me laugh a lot. Katherine Heigl’s character turns out to be someone that, although initially possessing unrealistic expectations of what she wants in a man that has meant that she has not been in a relationship or had sex for almost a year at the start of the film, is not afraid to not hesitate and go after her man despite the possibilty of rejection. There is also a strong cast of supporting characters (mainly Katherine Heigl’s character’s TV network work colleagues) and whilst the film is primarily a romantic comedy it also explores other themes such as sexism in the workplace and the nature of competition between rival TV networks in the battle for ratings. For me the stand-out scene from the film is where Katherine Heigl’s and Gerard Butler’s characters have that dance on a dancefloor because the chemistry and attraction between the two characters is so exhilarating. The film ends with a satisfying climax in a hot air balloon in the air surrounded by other hot air balloons with stunning scenery in the distance, and the beautiful cinematography of this scene perfectly matches the romance of not only the end of the film but a skillfully paced and well balanced movie. Although not a flawless film The Ugly Truth is another triumph for Katherine Heigl as she secures her place as the quintessential romantic comedy actress and comes highly recommended for men and women alike.

    what a let down!!

I couldn't wait to see this film, I adore Gerard Butler and the trailer looked fab. The film however was awful, I would go as far as saying its one of the worst rom coms I have ever seen, it just wasn't funny, I was sitting there waiting to laugh out loud and well I didn't, the humour is crude and leaves you feeling quite uncomfortable and its not like I am that conservative but this was just dire!.

I was expecting something more like the recent rom com 'The Proposal' which I also went to see which was a fab rom com and light and fluffy and a good laugh sadly 'The Ugly Truth' was just just a plain ugly film!

My advice is if you like your romantic comedy films to be light, fluffy and good fun then give this one a miss as it leaves you feeling robbed of over an hr of your life!
